Author Interview:

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

Yes, absolutely. As a child, I was always writing stories and drawing comic books. In my teens, I drew less and wrote more. From the ages of about 18-28 I did very little writing, but more living. However, I firmly believe that I hadn't had those experiences my writing now would be much more artificial. It's isn't always obvious when someone is writing about a painful or joyful experience that touches on those from their own life, but it often is when they're writing about something they know nothing about. Some writing about alcohol addiction is plain embarrassing. If you've never felt alcohol get a hold of you, how can your characters convince a reader who has?

What made you want to write erotica?

I believe it was a combination of wanting to write generally, and wanting to explore areas of my own fantasies. It's also no coincidence that Fifty Shades of Grey set all kinds of publishing records. I thought I'd have a go at that myself. Why not? I haven't sold millions, but I have sold thousands and that has reinforced a childhood belief that I am good enough (if not now, but someday) to make a living from writing.

Is there a genre you could never write? Which and why?

At the moment, I can't see myself writing children's books. That may change if I have kids myself. I think I'd need to be around from the day of birth to understand how a child grows. His or her imagination, needs, beliefs etc. I've been a stepdad, and I get on great with kids, but I need to be there from the start to get a grasp on their needs from entertainment. Someday, hopefully. But as things stand, I can't see myself writing a children's book.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?

Both. I think it's important to know how you plan to finish before you start a novel. It's not essential. When I started The Uncertain Cuckold (book 1 in the series), I didn't know where the story was going. But somewhere during the writing I discovered how it would end. In every single book since, I've known how it will end before I've started writing the beginning. That really does help tease the readers with occasional flashforwards in my prologues which set out to promise my plan is set in stone.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Not really. But I do lose motivation at times. If sales are slow, I get dejected. I start to think maybe this isn't for me. I let myself get distracted. I allow other things to get in the way of writing. That's not to say that the other things are not important. Just that when I'm focused and engaged in the process of writing, nothing else matters as much. And I believe that's how it has to be to bring the best writing out of one's self.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?

British author David Mitchell. His work is powerful. If I got to meet him, I'd be too embarrassed to tell him about my books. He has such a command of the English language, whilst also demonstrating a profound imagination. Last year, I saw the film version of one of his novels (Cloud Atlas) in the cinema. I loved it. However, a lot of people couldn't follow it. It worked well in novel form, but I did think during the film that if you hadn't read the book you'd struggle with the movie. Still, his books have all been brilliant, I've read every one and I'd recommend him to everyone, regardless of their tastes.

Have you ever written anything else?

I've written 3 books which I've never published, and all were before I turned to erotica. The first was written in my teens, came to 250,000 words and I can't honestly say it'll ever see the light of day. I've read parts of it again, and I get very nostalgic, but it would require A LOT of rewriting. It was written during and set during the 1990s, and I got a little interest from one agent and one publisher between 1999 and 2001. Unfortunately, I think its time to shine has passed. The next two books were written in 2009 and 2012 respectively and all I need is a break from writing the current erotica to rewrite those two titles and get them out there. I believe in them, which is why I'm protective from publishing them as they are.

Favorite quote from your book?

If I can't taste your kiss, then I don't exist – that's a line from The Unchained Cuckold. I won't give away whose words they are, how they're found, or who they're to... But they will appear in the prologue – which is a flashforward – and by the end of the novel the reader will know who they came from.

Will you have a new book coming out soon? Can you tell us about it?

Yes. It is titled The Unchained Cuckold, and will be available in late April '14. It is the fifth book in a series of novels I've written called The Uncertain Cuckold. It features the same characters – Matt and Jill – from The Christmas Exhibition, and begins six years later in their relationship. They've both realised the same fantasies turn them on. They want Jill to have a lover. But by Unchained, Matt feels Jill has become more her lover's girl than his. Their marriage is only weeks away. And their neighbour, Francesca, and Matt have grown extremely close. It has an absolutely explosive ending, which I can't hint anymore at for fear of spoiling.

Anything you want to say to your readers?

Just a huge thank you. For every single person who's taken money out of their pocket and spent it on one of my titles, I cannot show enough appreciation. Then there have also been the readers who've contacted me with their feedback, which has been overwhelmingly positive. So far I've been lucky not to encounter any trolls. Anyone who didn't like my stuff seemed to just stay away. And of course I've got to thank the folks out there who've reviewed my books, who've shared tweets and blog posts. Just simply anyone who's ever helped spread the word – Thanks!

My Review:

Vaughn is certainly a master of writing dirty talk. Often times in erotica the story goes on hold during the sex scenes, but Vaughn does just the opposite. He manages to use the sex to make his story all the more compelling. Not only that, the way his characters talk to each other serves to add to the anticipation of the sex in the story even more. He gracefully builds his plot, slowly increasing the intensity of the sex. Also, this plot has a certain level of complexity that most certainly took a good amount of foresight. Clearly, Vaughn planned out exactly what he wanted to write in order to create arousal. When I initially started reading this story, I did not foresee any BDSM taking place because Matt didn’t seem the type. However, Vaughn proved me wrong while still maintaining within Matt’s character. Well done!

I appreciated that Vaughn was shameless with his sexual exploits. Matt did have a certain level of questioning why he was being turned on by Jill’s behavior, which is only natural. But at least Matt owned that he was turned on. The Christmas Exhibition is some excellent erotica for those who like some amount of BDSM, but that which is clearly consensual.
